Nadi Shodana -- The Recharger & Purifier

Nadi Shodana -- The Recharger & Purifier

In Sanskrit Nadi means “nerves” and Shodhana means “purification.” Therefore, Nadi Shodhana is primarily cleaning and purifying the nerves and channels of our body and mind organism, as well as balancing it. Nadi Shodana is also known asAnulom Vilom” or “Alternate Nostril Breathing”.

This practice is one of the most important practices and aim of yoga. The goal of this is practice is to make your breathing slow, calm, longer, deeper and rhythmic, to live longer. By exchanging the gases (carbon dioxide and oxygen) we recharge our whole body-system and clean our nerve channels, like a vacuum cleaner. It is best to do this practice early in the morning before breakfast, also possible before sleep but not with a full stomach. Everyone can do this practice, even with severe sickness.

🔶    How to do?

C  Coose a comfortable sitting position—either cross-legged on the floor (with a cushion or blanket to support the spine), or in a chair with your feet flat on the floor. Gently close the eyes and your mouth. Place the tips of the index and middle finger on your forehead thumb and ring finger on your nose (Nasikagra Mudra). You will alternately use the right thumb to close the right nostril and the right ring finger to close the left nostril. Close your right nostril with your right thumb and start inhale through your left nostril slowly, deeply and without force. Close your left nostril with your ring finger, and exhale through your right nostril slowly and deeply.

3)      Then close your left nostril with your right ring finger and inhale through your right nostril slowly and deeply without force, then close your right nostril with your right thumb and exhale through your left nostril.

This is one round. You start inhaling with your left nostril and exhaling at the end through your left nostril. Nadi Shodhana can be immensely rewarding, even when practiced for as little as five minutes on a regular basis, but practicing daily for ten to fifteen minutes offers even deeper benefits.

  Precaution

There is no precaution. This practice is suitable for everyone, as long as breath retention is not practiced. Breath retentions is vital but should only be done under the supervision of a qualified yoga teacher.

     Benefits

Nadi Shodhana recharging your cells including brain cells and the pranic system. Balances your nervous system and both hemispheres of the brain, purify the blood, and balances your whole personality, mind and emotions. It keeps your breath smooth, longer and rhythmic, to live longer. With relax breathing there is more and enough oxygen is available in blood and cells helping other systems for their normal functioning, As we know that without enough oxygen digestive system cannot turn food into glucose. This practice can be used to manage any mental or emotional illness.
